Chiropractic began
in the United States in 1895. Dr. Daniel David Palmer, its founder,
was amongst the earliest practitioners of the modern era to recognise
the importance of the spine and the nervous system, as it relates
to wellbeing. Dr Palmer called this new art and science chiropractic
from the Greek words chiro-hand and praktikas-done
by.
He took the
ancient art of manipulation, which had been practised for centuries
throughout the world and developed it into specific chiropractic
techniques which are used to this day. Dr Palmer discovered chiropractic
the same year as Willhelm Roentgen discovered x-ray. Chiropractors
have utilised this technology of spinal imaging and it remains a
very important diagnostic aid for the profession to this day. Dr.
Palmer opened the Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1904 and there
are now over thirty chiropractic colleges world-wide, including
four in the United Kingdom.
